Heteroscodra maculata / Togo Starburst
Heteroscodra maculata, commonly known as the Togo Starburst Baboon Tarantula, is a striking Old World arboreal species native to West Africa, especially Togo and Ghana.
This tarantula is renowned for its chalky white coloration, mottled black and brown markings, and lightning-fast reflexes. It’s a favorite among experienced keepers due to its dramatic appearance and unique behavior—but it’s definitely not for beginners.
🌟 Key Features of Heteroscodra maculata
Appearance: Bold starburst-like patterns across its body and legs, with thick rear legs and a stocky build.
Size: Adults reach a leg span of 5–6 inches (13–15 cm).
Speed & Temperament: Extremely fast and defensive. Known to jump or bolt during enclosure maintenance. Venom is medically significant, so handling is discouraged.
Habitat: Arboreal—lives in tree holes and vegetation. Requires vertical climbing surfaces like cork bark and bamboo. Heavy webbing is typical.
Humidity & Temperature: Prefers 70–80% humidity and temperatures between 22–26°C (72–79°F).
Care Level: Strictly for advanced keepers due to its speed, defensiveness, and potent venom.
🕷️ Behavior & Ecology
Native to tropical rainforests, this species is adapted to vertical living and dense foliage.
It tends to be shy but will defend its territory aggressively if disturbed.
Unlike New World tarantulas, it lacks urticating hairs and relies on speed and venom for defense.
