Psalmopoeus irminia – The Suntiger Tarantula

The Psalmopoeus irminia, commonly known as the Suntiger tarantula, is a striking species native to the tropical rainforests of Venezuela. Known for its bold black body adorned with vibrant yellow or orange markings resembling tiger stripes, this arboreal spider is a favourite among tarantula enthusiasts.

Suntigers are fast, agile hunters that prefer to live in trees, creating silken retreats in bark crevices or branches. Unlike many tarantulas, they do not have urticating hairs, which means they rely more on their speed and strong bite for defence. Despite this, they are generally shy and tend to avoid confrontation.

Psalmopoeus irminia requires a humid, warm environment with plenty of vertical space to climb. Their impressive colouration and dynamic behaviour make them an exciting species to observe, but handling is not recommended due to their speed and potent venom (though it’s not deadly to humans
