Sphodromantis Kersteni - Giant African Mantis
The Sphodromantis kersteni, commonly known as the Giant African Mantis, is a striking and robust species popular among insect enthusiasts. Native to East Africa, this mantis can grow up to 10 cm (about 4 inches) long, making it one of the larger mantis species.
Housing your Giant African Mantis is straightforward: a well-ventilated enclosure about 20x20x30 cm works well. Provide plenty of vertical space with sticks and foliage for climbing and hiding. Maintain temperatures between 22°C and 28°C, with moderate humidity around 50-60%.
Feeding is simple—offer a diet of live insects such as crickets, flies, or roaches twice or thrice weekly. Fresh water can be provided via misting, as these mantises usually hydrate from droplets. Handle gently and minimally to avoid stress, and watch your mantis’ fascinating predatory behaviour up close
